in China

Kylie asked:

Probably in 2011 around July – August for my partner’s 30th birthday. For anyone who has been there on holidays, I was just after a bit of a guide. Travel agents are a rip off, I was thinking about organizing my own itinerary. I want to go for about 2 weeks.
What are the best places to go?
How much roughly will the whole trip cost me?
How much spending money should i take?
I know i need to research more on this, but was just hoping for a rough idea.
Thanks :)

Dude

it would cost a lot.

But be careful, they have different free speech laws. In other words, they have NO free speech. So be careful what you say.

All the Best

You’ll probably end up a victim of some crime (like murder or mugging) or misfortune (like the airline going bust) if you and your partner go outside a larger organised group. I think you should rethink.

July – August will be quite hot in China, many places have air-conditioners but climbing the Great Walls in close to 40 degree celcius can be quite something.

Hong Kong is confirmed a must-visit by a recent CNN poll. The Victoria Harbor and the Peak is also rated as Asia’s No. 1 skyline by a Japanese TV station. Check and have a wonderful trip!

The best cities to go to are Shanghai, Hong Kong, Kunming, Beijing, and Guanzhou. In China $1=7 yuan in China so this whole trip will be relatively cheaper. I recommend bringing shorts if you’re going to Hong Kong, Beijing, or Shanghai, but Capris if you are going to Kunming. Some great places to visit are the great wall, The Temple of Heaven, the Kunming Zoo, Marketplaces, The Houtong Villages (Beijing), The Yunan Province Minority Village, Tianamen Square, and The Forbidden City. Also unless your only going to Beijing or staying in that area, it is pointless to learn Mandarin since there are so many dialects (just so you know). I used to speak a dialect of a specific city so if I talked to anyone outside of the city we could only understand each other roughly. until a friend helped me convert to mandarin. So don’t go too overboard with the language. Just a few basic words like Nihao, Wei (hi on a phone), counting words, days of the week (xingxi-yi, xingxi-er etc.), and direction words should get you through your trip. Have fun! :)
